I'm only maintaining this site to try out a little html/xhtml and CSS from time to time. That's also a good opportunity to write about the things I'm interested in like computers, Gentoo, music and books.
Unfortunately I started using computers rather late about 1995. My first one was an old
Atari a friend gave me. The OS had to be loaded before you could actually begin
with anything else via diskette. The desktop was black and white only of course with
those typical ugly fonts.
About a year later I was a proud owner of a Mac Performa 6200. For me it was like a
quantum leap. Coloured display, 1.2 GB hard drive and Mac OS 7.5.3. The Performa was
followed by a Power Macintosh 7300 and a Umax 900S. Both were equipped with a Sonnet
G4 700 Mhz processor upgrade card.
This is were I tried Linux for the first time. Mac OS X would only run on my 7300 but
not on the Umax with the Sonnet upgrade card. I never found out why. Looking for an out
of the box Linux I discovered Yellow Dog Linux made for the Power PC architecture.
On ebay I was lucky to get a G3 450Mhz mainboard out of the famous Blue & White G3. Now I could leave the old world Macs behind. Mac OS X was no problem here and I was able to install Gentoo. I also made my first steps in the non Macintosh world by buying an old Netvista.
Because I loved to install operating systems I gave Yellow Dog, Debian, Mandrake (Mandriva),
OpenBSD and NetBSD as well as Gentoo a try on the PowerPC architecture. On x86 I had Solaris,
OpenBSD, NetBSD, Debian, PCBSD, QNX and Gentoo.
At the moment I'm running a Gentoo only system on quite recent hardware. Getting into operating
systems is very time consuming and I decided to stick to the OS I like best and rather learn a little
more about it.
